Peru is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, there is the greatest chain of mountains in the world - the Andes, here from a small lake Laurikocha starts the most full-flowing river in the world - the Amazon, in the north-east stretches selva, the Amazon rain forest. Lima, "city of kings", the capital of Peru, now numbering more than 7 million residents - is the most colonial city among Hispanic capitals. Being a political center of the South American colonies of Spain since 1542, Lima has traditionally been a center of spreading the Spanish culture on the continent. Museums of Lima, where assembled treasures of ancient civilizations, have a world fame. The tour includes the inspection of the architectural jewels of the colonial and modern Lima neighborhoods emerging in the Pacific beaches. Restaurants deserve a special attention for first-class service and excellent cuisine. City was founded by Francisco Pizarro in 1535. At the end of 16 century Lima has become the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru. The city, for having a capital status, is much obliged to its geographical position, as it's situated in the central part of the coastal area and in the time of Spanish sway it served as a transit point for the fleet getting out the wealth of the South American colonies to the metropolis. Machu Picchu is the lost Inca city that keeps secrets of one of the most powerful empires of antiquity. The Holy City of Machu Picchu, built on top of steep mountains in surrounding by impassable jungle, had not been found by the Spaniards and escaped destruction and looting. Even today you can only get there on a special train, or by helicopter, and yet Machu Picchu is one of the most visited places in the world. "Secret City" of the Inca, where had gone the most enlightened priests after the fall of the Inca empire, and which had not been found by the Spaniards, was discovered only in the beginning of the 20th century. It's possible to commit an ascent to the Uali-Pikchu castle towering over the city of Machu Picchu, and visit the temple of the moon, where only women were allowed.
